Body Piercing Aftercare

A new piercing is a new wound, and therefore the aftercare your piercing receives is very important.

It is your responsibility to ensure that the following information is adhered to. During the healing process, there will be a sticky, yellowish/white secretion from the lymph glands. We call these "crusties" and they build up on the jewellery at the openings of the piercing. It is important that a new piercing be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a day; using Liquid Bactine, Dial Antibacterial liquid soap, (these types of soaps must be diluted one part soap to four parts distilled water) or Liquid Neutrogena.

Wash your hands before touching the area.

Rinse the piercing with warm water to soften crusties.

Hold Jewellery firmly without moving it so as not to drag any crusties into the piercing.

Using a cotton bud, clean the crusties off of the Jewellery at the opening of the piercing. After all hard matter has been scrubbed off, slowly move the Jewellery to one side to clean the part that was inside of the piercing. Then begin to move the Jewellery back and forth, applying plenty of cleaning solution to clean the inside of the piercing.

Rinse the piercing thoroughly, working the Jewellery back and forth under running water to remove all traces of cleaning solution. An antibiotic ointment, such as Bacitracin or Neosporin, can be used for the first few days after the piercing, or if signs of infection occur; however, limit use to no more than 4-7 days, as problems can result with prolonged use.

Avoid sun tanning, as some antibiotics are photosensitive and can cause a rash to develop. Many have found that a solution of one teaspoon of table salt added to a tall glass of lukewarm water is a very gentle and soothing rinse for irritated piercings. This also helps toughen the skin.

Avoid using band-aids or bandages.

After your piercing, jewellery should not be removed for any length of time for at least the first six months.

Should your pierced area get infected, call a professional piercer or doctor for further advice.
